National 9/11 Memorial & Museum First Signature
Ceremony
The National 9/11 Memorial & Museum is bringing steel I-beams that
will be used in the construction of the Memorial to Washington,
D.C. for the public to sign on Friday and Saturday, July 3rd and
4th from 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. The beams will be located
outside of the Newseum on Pennsylvania Avenue at Sixth Street NW.
A First Signature Ceremony held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 3rd
will present the inaugural signatures in D.C. by government leaders,
local first responders, and 9/11 victims’ families. The First
Signature Ceremony is a chance to bring the community together and
reflect not just on the events of 9/11, but, equally as important,
on the spirit that emerged in the aftermath.
In the past two years, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum has brought
steel I-beams to 27 states across the country. The public is invited
to “be a part of history” by signing these beams. Since
the first beam signing event in Columbia, SC, tens of thousands
of people have added their names and reflections to the steel that
will become part of the national memorial to the victims of 9/11.
The 9/11 Memorial at the World Trade Center will be a tribute to
the nearly 3,000 innocent victims of the terrorist attacks of February
26, 1993 and September 11, 2001. The Museum on the site of the Memorial
will educate the millions of visitors to Ground Zero through exhibitions
that will include artifacts both intimate and monumental.
