OUR DEBT TO THE HEROIC MEN AND VALIANT WOMEN IN THE SERVICE OF OUR COUNTRY CAN NEVER BE REPAID. THEY HAVE EARNED OUR UNDYING GRATITUDE. AMERICA WILL NEVER FORGET THEIR SACRIFICES.

    - President Harry S Truman

The World War II Memorial was formally dedicated on May 29, 2004. The memorial honors and celebrates the lives of millions of men and women who served in the United States armed forces during World War II. More than 400,000 people lost their lives in this war defending freedom and democracy. A Freedom Wall features a collection of 4,000 gold stars to commemorate the lives that were lost.

The colossal Atlantic and Pacific archways provide the anchors for this 7.4-acre oval memorial, which is beautifully situated between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. Pillars surrounding the oval memorial represent the unity and commitment of 56 states and territories during this time of war. A circular sitting area situated among graceful fountains and greens lawns provides a serene spot for visitors to remember and reflect on the cost of freedom.
